You may remember back in July when we ran the story of the loom band dress made in Prestatyn that fetched a £170,000 bid on eBay. A crazy figure for a crazy story that unfortunately didn’t wind up in the pocket of Kathryn Burnand and Helen Wright – the winning bidder refused to pay and it didn’t sell again once it was relisted.
However, the famous loom dress could now be receiving a new lease of life as it goes for auction, all in the name of charity this time.
The dress, which took 45 hours in total to make, quickly made the rounds on the big www when the inordinately high bids came in and climbed to a huge number. Helen’s daughter, Sian, also had some fame as she modelled for the listing photo on eBay and was featured on BBC’s Newsround, with the grown-ups also having time on the couch of BBC’s The One Show.
After the payment fell through and the relisting was unsuccessful, Helen returned to work in a Prestatyn pub as usual and hasn’t looked back in anger at what she calls a “whirlwind” time.
Kathryn said: “It took me about 45 hours to make and it started off as a joke basically but I said I would give it a go and it started from there.
“I’d never made anything out of loom bands before so I was thrown in at the deep end.
“I have arthritis and I could only work on the dress in half-hour stints because I get cramp in my hands and can’t press my fingers together.
“It was fun while it lasted. But it didn’t sell and there’s not a lot we can do about it at the end of the day. We thought if we can’t make any money out of it we should et it go to a good cause.
“So we contacted Macmillan Cancer Support and they said ‘Thank you very much, we are having a fundraising event in October’. Macmillan is very close to our hearts because I lost my dad and my step-dad to cancer and Helen lost her husband to cancer.”
Although bids may not make it into six digits this time around, let’s hope that the loom band dress brings in some fantastic donations for a great charity. It will be sold at an auction to be held at Soughton Hall in Northop on October 11.
