Tis the season for glamorous hair in December. With Christmas just around the bend hairdressers are frantically styling, colouring and cutting a wide variety of hair into beautiful and elegant styles for this festive time of year.
If you ask any hairdressing salon, like local award winners TH1 in Bangor, what the busiest time of year in their industry is, they will definitely tell you it is the month of December prior to Christmas.
It is advisable to book months in advance as there have been many unfortunate people who call up in December, hoping to get their hair perfect for all the Christmas parties, only to find not a single appointment is available in the lead up to Christmas.
No other month can boast as many styles and beautification of hair like December. That is because Christmas is associated with glamour and finery in every aspect. This is not matched in the summer because people are thinking about holidays lounging by pools and if you know good hair care, you will know that dying your hair then going in a pool is a big mistake and any colour treatment will be altered by sun bleaching. Winter is the time when hair will retain its new coat the best.
So what styles are most popular at this time of year? Well since it is all about the parties and champagne, winter has an indoor atmosphere meaning people are willing to indulge less practical hairstyles and spend longer getting ready. There will be less ‘convenience cuts’ which are easy to manage, quick to style and hold up well to all sorts of activities and weather. You will see a lot more hairstyles involving long flowing locks whether they are silky straight or big bouncing curls. You will also notice an increase in ‘up’ styling, darker, richer colours and glittering hair accessories. In fact you might see one person with a wide range of different styles throughout this month if they are a bit of a glamour fanatic.
In honour of glamorous hair we have decided to list our top recommended styles to try this month if you are looking for something new to showcase for Christmas.
Our December Recommended Styles:
Smooth & Bejewelled – Straighteners are one of the most well-known pieces of hair equipment and part of nearly everyone’s hair arsenal. If you have naturally curly hair then it can be great fun to go ultra-smooth and sleek for December. Nothing shows off your new colour or the high shine gloss effect better than straightened hair. Why not kick it up an extra gear for Christmas by adoring your poker straight locks with various coloured jewels? They are so many different versions that easily twist or clip into hair and add a glamorous, Christmas sparkle.
High & Mighty – Putting your hair up went out of style for a while there, but now it is back. High hair was popular because it accentuates the cheek bones and slims the face. It is a great elegant and high fashion look that should never be allowed to go out of style as there are so many ways of interpreting it. You can have it all back in a variety of shapes of partially flowing down for contrast but why not try going as high as your heels for symmetry and impact this Christmas. If you have great cheekbones then high and mighty hair will only draw more attention to your natural assets. Why hide them?
Devilishly Cutesy – The cute look is very underrated but a number of excellent fashion genres that are being imported from Japan and are very in this year emphasise all things cute. Over in Japan it is called Kawaii and can apply to everything from toys and bags to clothes and hair. It is risqué and fun because it takes cute to its extreme, so if you are feeling brave and love frills, why not give it ago this December. It is so easy because much of it draws upon our own culture from the Victorian era. Simply think bows, pigtails and plaits but in bright colours. This is a great one for gathering hair accessories. Why not make it a bit devilish by choosing colours like red and black to add a harsher and more dynamic edge to your cutesy pigtails. Extreme contrast can be the height of fashion but we recommend consulting a professional stylist before ploughing ahead with this extreme look, however nothing says cute like Christmas so it is the perfect time to experiment with it.
Voluptuously Glam – Big volume and flowing curls are always most popular in December. This is because people are willing to spend more time getting ready and if you have naturally straight hair then getting it curled is hard work. It takes four times longer than straightening but is well worth the effort if you get it right. Nothing says glamorous like big volume at the roots then large graceful curls. Hair salons will usually recommend hot rollers left in for about an hour, until cool for this look and adding root boost and a blow dry first will only increase the effect of the natural soft waves.
Fabulously Bouncy – If you want to take curls to the next level then go a bit tighter, this will increase their buoyancy. A curling wand, overnight rollers or twists are the way to go for this look. A little uncomfortable but it lasts longer and the bouncy fun hairstyles matches the jolly spirit of Christmas.
Blast from the Past – Big hair was all the rage a few decades ago so why not get out the rollers and the hairspray and go for that ‘fat’ hair look from the early 60s. Retro is great fun and isn’t Christmas all about tradition anyway? Besides, nothing says healthy hair like lots of volume.
